MAURICEVILLE
COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING PUTARA ROAD MAINTENANCE. HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES & FARM LORRIES. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday, the chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham presiding. There were also present Councillors A. Forsberg, D. Bennett, A. Gray ..and C. Welch. Leave of absence was granted to Councilloi R. Judd. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £1,396 9s 7d and ac counts were presented for payment amounting to £303 0s lid. The chairman reported that he had arranged, at the request of the Welling ton Education Board to grant the use of the county office for school purposes pending the erection of a new school, the rental to be £1 per week plus cost of removal of fittings. The chairman’.action was approved. The chairman also reported that he had applied for an allowance in respect of certain requisite repairs to one of the county lorries and the company had granted a sum of £lO. The Eketahuna County Council ad vised that it would agree to carry out maintenance work on the Putara Road for the Mauriceville Council to the ex tent of £5O for the year, plus the usual five per cent of the amount ex • pended by way of contributions to ad ministration expenses for that purpose. It was decided to accept the proposal with the appreciation of the council of the co operation of the Eketahuna Council.
The chairman reported that the question had arisen in regard to amount of royalty payable to Mr Trass in res pect of metal crushed at the Master - ton County’s Opaki depot. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, with power to act. It was decided to agree to the present basis of allocation of heavy traffic fees as between boroughs and conn ties, for a further period of two years. The Wairarapa South County Council requested the opinion of the Mau riceville Council upon the question of exemption of farm lorries used generally or only for dairy work from heavy traffic fees. It was decided to favour partial exemption of all farm lorries from these fees to the extent of twothirds of a fee but not total exemption. The Centennial Committee requested efforts to be made to supply photographs. etc, of industries or interestingscenery for inspection at the exhibition. The matter was left in the hands of the clerk to submit to the local factories suggesting that they might provide some such photographs for the benefit of their own respective industries.
The State Forest Service advised allocation of £4 19s 9d in respect of fifths for the quarter to June 30. On the motion of the chairman, a resolution of sympathy with the late Mr Alfred Falkner’s family was passed, all members standing as a mark of respect and the clerk was directed to write to Mr O. Falkner accordingly, Mr Alfred Falkner having rendered valuable public service for many years in the county, to a great extent gratuitously as acting engineer.
