BADMINTON

INTER CLUB COMPETITION A GRADE FINAL. WIN FOR MASTERTON A. The final of the A grade inter-club competition conducted by the Wairarapa Badminton Association was played on Saturday night in the Drill Hall between Masterton A and Masterton B. the former winning by 8 matches .to 4. The victory for the A team was not unexpected but nevertheless some of the individual results were surprising. The B team started the match very badly, losing the first men’s and ladies’ doubles. The game between Hawksworth and. O’Connor and Payton and Walker was a patchy exhibition though at time all four played fair badminton. Mrs Hawksworth and Miss N. Rishworth combined excellently to score a victory over Mrs D. Young and Miss B. Payton. Miss Rishworth’s play has improved very much since the beginning of the season and her support of Mrs Hawksworth in this game was excellent. Miss B. Payton played her usual solid game in this match. The surprise of the evening however was the defeat of the top A players by Mrs E. Holmwood and Miss J. Betts. When this game was played the A team had a sufficient margin to win the match so this game was played in a care-free spirit. Mrs Holmwood’s net shots, combined with Miss J. Betts’s smashes had the A pair in trouble from the outset and after a close match they scored a popular win in the third set. Miss L. Hosking and Miss E. Clough scored one victory in their ladies' doubles due chiefly to the fine play of Miss Hosk- ■ ing. The A team made a clean sweep of the combined doubles and it was in these games that the best badminton of the evening was seen. Both P. Rishworth and N. Faulknor in their matches played.very well in the combined doubles but their combination in the men’s doubles left a lot to be desired. Dr O’Connor, in his usual deliberate style, scored three wins. J. Dwane and D. Young played excellently to defeat Rishworth and Faulknor in the men’s doubles but strangely enough each lost in their combined matches.

The Challenge Cup for A grade competition, which was donated in 1934 and won that year by the Nomads Club, has since then been held by the Masterton Club. Detailed results are as follow, Masterton A being mentioned first in eachcase:—
