Record in Public Service.

Reference was recently made to tile record of Mr W. G. Belton, of the Patea County Council, who has been a member of the county council for 25 years and has missed only two meetings. Mr Belton, however, has very far to go before he can equal the record of Mr H. M. Driver, who for 41 years has been a member of the Bruce County Council and has missed only one meeting in that period. Mr Driver, who entered the council as a young man in his late twenties, has served six terms as chairman of the council. Great Barrier Doctor. Medical services for the Great Barrier Island have been offered by a doctor at Coromandel, who points out that there are hospital facilities at Coromandel, which is closer to the island than Auckland, and is also connected by telephone. The doctor also suggests that he could visit the island by launch each week, and at any time when an urgent call was received. The offer is the outcome of a request by the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Union to the Auckland Hospital Board to consider appointing a resident medical officer at the island. Vehicular Ferry Gates.

The new safety gates on the vehicular ferry landings al the eastern reclamation and at Devonport, which have been installed for some days, arc proving satisfactory in operation. The gates, which are made of tubular steel with a large stop sign on top, are similar in operation to the old stop signs, except that they are situated a couple of yards further up the ramp. The lift apron at the end of the ramp can be raised or lowered only when the gate is closed. The installation of gates on the up-harbour vehicular ferry run will be carried out shortly. Arbor Day. The observance of Arbor Day has been sot down this year for Wednesday, August 2. "In view of the national importance of tree-planting,” slates the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon W. E. Parry, in a Gazette notice, "local bodies throughout New Zealand are requested to organise suitable celebrations on that dale.
