GREYTOWN

SUDDEN DEATH CAPTAIN H. C. BARCHAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred suddenly at Grey town last evening of Captain Herbert Clarence Barcham, a retired sea captain of the P. and O. Company. He had visited a neighbour’s house to enjoy a game of chess and as he was filling his pipe he collapsed and died. Dr Oakey was called but could only pronounce life to be extinct. The late Captain Barcham was born in England 78 years ago, and went to sea at an early age in a windjammer. He commanded several steamers which traded all over the world. He came to Grey town about eight years ago io reside with his son, Mr S. H. Barcham. The late Captain Barcham had many hobbies and nothing pleased him better than to be constructing or repairing children’s broken toys. His kindly way made him a great favourite with ths young children. For many years he was an active member of the Greytown Bowling Club and served a term as president. He gave up bowling last year owing to failing eyesight. As a keen chess player he was foremost in establishing a chess circle in Greytown. He is survived by his son, Mr S. H. Barcham, of Greytown. Social Afternoon. A pleasant afternoon was spent yesterday in the Presbyterian Sunday School. The programme was as follows: Duets, Mesdames H. Farley and H. G. Carter; song. Mrs H. Farley; old-time tunes, Mrs Morison; Glee Choir, two items: vocal duet, Mesdames York, Senr, and Robinson; song, Mrs T. G. R. Ingley. Mrs Whimp arranged a competition which was won by Mrs Ray Anker. Mrs Johnson expressed thanks to all who had come along and given their services. She also said how gratifying it was to see other church members taking part and helping their effort. The Presbyterian Ladies' Guild supplied afternoon tea which, was enjoyed by all.
