The greens were sodden. Lacey went round in 75, Mitchell in 75, Compston 76, Kyle 77, and Lawson, Little and McLean in 79. The holder of the open championship, Reg Whitcombe, set a St Andrews record with six successive threes from the eighth to the thirteenth holes, four of which were birdies.
