GOOD RESPONSE

MASTERTON TERRITORIAL FORCES. THIRTY-FOUR RECRUITS SINCE THURSDAY. As many ns 31 recruits Rave been enrolled in the Territorial force in Masterton since the appeal made last Thursday. So good has the response been that only nine more men arc required to till the quota lor the various forces centred in Mast.ert.on. Although lhe enrolments actually exceed lhe number required. 31 when the appeal was made. 12 of those who came to hand were for the mounted rilles, which were already tilled. These men, however, will be absorbed us other men arc* transferred out. lhe position now is that two more men are needed as transport drivers and seven more for the infantry platoons. Both the machine-gun section and the mounted rifles are filled. Last night, when the mounted rifle units paraded, 1G enrolments were received. Although the filling of the Masterton quota is in immediate prospect. recruits are still needed to fill vacancies caused by men being transferred out of the force or to other centres.

As an indication of the keenness of the men it may be mentioned that at the parade of the mounted rifles last night there was an attendance of 26 out of a strength of 32, a most satisfactory muster considering the unfavourable weather conditions. This is all the more remarkable when it is realised that many of the men came as far as forty miles to attend the parade. Two men were present from Flat Point, two from Tinui and others from Brahcepeth. West Taratahi. Tea, Rangitumau, Wangaehu, Gladstone, Longbush. Greytown. Weraiti, Matarawa, Kokotau. Whareamu, Hinakura, Kahuminga, Te Parae, Opaki and Te Ore Ore. NATIONAL RESERVE. MEN STILL ENROLLING TN MASTERTON. A fairly steady stream of enrolments in the national reserve is continuing in Masterion. At the Post Office alone during June there were 53, while the total for Masterton to date is now 177. 113 of these being at the Post Office and 64 at the Defence Office.
