HARRIER ACTIVITIES

KIATERE CLUB. TURNBULL TROPHY CONTEST. On Saturday the Kiatere Harrier Club journeyed to Wellington for the first race of the James Turnbull Trophy against the Olympic Club. The race proved to be a thrilling contest, Kiatere winning by a very small margin. The points being Kiatere 70 pts Olympic 71 pts. The course was of a strenuous nature over six miles. E. Richardson (O.), took the lead and although at one stage R. Greeks (K.), who was running very well, caught him, he was never headed, and won by 50 yards. A feature of the race was the splendid teaming by the first four Kiatere men. The Kiatere placings were 2,3, 4,5, 9, 11, 17, 19. The detailed placings were:—E. Richardson (O), time 37.38, 1; R. Greeks (K), 37.45, 2; J. Laing (K), 3; W. MacDonald (K), 4; W. Burgess (K), 5; D. Sunderland (O), 6. The juniors of the Kiatere Club had a race over one lap of the course, and in an exciting finish C. Stewart, N. Jacobsen and M. Doyle sprinted in, M. Doyle winning from N. Jacobsen by inches. A sealed handicap held in conjunction with this race was won by C. Stewart with M. Doyle second. After the run afternoon tea was served and this was thoroughly enjoyed by all. In a speech the Olympic vice-captain welcomed the visitors. In reply W. MacDonald, the Kiatere captain, thanked the Olympic Club for their hospitality and apologised for the absence of Mr A. L. Askew (president). Cheers were given for the ladies committee. In the evening the visitors were entertained at the Majestic Theatre. Mr A. L. Askew, the club’s popular president, is making a. good recovery from his recent illness.

There will be training runs at the Park Oval on Tuesday and Thursday nights as the Wellington Provincial Championships are to be held on July 29.
