CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE TRENTHAM RUNNERS UNDER REVIEW Can Survey Win the Wellington Steeples? / JOHN CHARLES AND POWER CHIEF WILL BE THERE
(By
“CARBINE.”)
Trentham fields are always hard, and this year is no exception. No doubt when the last race on the first day’s attractive programme has been run, many a punter will be wiser and shorter of ready cash than he was at 11 a.m. Class horses will take part in every race, and in some events all the horses have had recent wins, so form miaht not be a very helpful guide. Main interest will be centred round the Wellington Steeplechase, a distance of three and a quarter miles. Every horse in this event is capable of winning, and with such runners as All Irish, Survey. John Charles and Gold Wren engaged, not to mention Power Chief, a fast, thrillinq race should result. The rest of the races are sure to keenly contested and it is possible that more than one outsider’s number will be hoisted before the day is completed.
MARIRI HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP. About two miles and a half.
Silver Sight will carry top weight in the first race on the programme, and although he did not run into a place in the June Hurdles at Wanganui, filled third position in the Dromore Hack Steeplechase at Ashburton. He was second into the straight but blundered. The weight might prove a little difficult. Cottingham may be fancied, but he fell at Ashburton. Hanover is sure to find favour as this horse is in winning form. Bridegroom is another who can be expected to make the going interesting. Five placings in the last five starts is sure to find support for Rapa Waiata and his recent easy win in the June Steeplechase at Hawke’s Bay will also weigh heavily in his favour. Chile is also a form horse and the distance should suit this horse admirably. Kikiroki has run into second place in thclast two starts and is a horse who might be handy at the finish. Count Willonyx carried 9.10 to victory in the Napier Steeplechase over the same distance. Lactose was a winner at the Otaki meeting on June 24 and will probably find favour as he won easily. Car Leaf has riot been placed of late, but at the same time this horse might not be far away as they flash past the post. Those finding favour, however, may include Bridegroom Rapa Waiata Kikiroki or Hanover WOBURN HANDICAP (Hack conditions). Six furlongs. First Division.
Top weight Wild Talk has not raced for some time and might be in need of a race or two before striking form. Halley is a horse who can be depended on to make the race interesting. This horse scored a win and a third at the recent Hawke's Bay meeting and will not be without solid support. A brilliant win at the Bay of Plenty meeting will probably find favour for Susan, who should turn on a good race. Lucullus Boy and Rarotonga are sure to be liked, while Erlick is in winning form. Erlick scored a fine win in the Hairini Hack at Waipa, a distance of 9 furlongs, and the shorter race might have just as good results. Joe Louis and White Rajah do not impress, while Kemara is a form horse, but may be in need of a race or two. Little Ruse is a battler, and is sure to give the top weights a run for their money. Of the rest Neptune looks the best, but supported horses may include Halley Susan Erlick
Regicide 8 4 Shining Hours carried 9.3 in the Tainui Hack Handicap at the OtakiMaori meeting. She led into the straight, but then tired into third position. White Gold has not raced for some time, but may not be far away at the finish. Phenomenal is a form horse and the recent success of this horse in .he Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashi’urton over the same distance is sure ; find him support. Rex Maitland has been on the track for some time and might be in need of a race before striking form. Conversion might command support, while Auto Sweep and High Test have not been racing of late. Viracious is another who has not been on the track lately. A horse who might go well is Regicide. This horse has been among the placed ones lately and six furlongs might be the right distance. Floral Robe has not met with much success of late, but has always been well up. The rest do not impress and support may come for Shining Hours Phenomenal Regicide VITTORIA HURDLE HANDICAP (Hack conditions). One mile and a
Fireguard will probably be a firm favourite with a good section of the public. He won the Greenfield Hurdle Handicap, a distance of a mile and a half in splendid fashion and is report-
ed to be working out well. Erebus is another who may not be far away when the numbers go up. This horse ran second to Lustral in the Pukehou Hack event at Otaki. and the latter is a horse who must be seriously considered in this event. Ponty and De Friend do not impress, nor does Export or Araboa. Misurina is a form horse, and if the public are going to support form, this horse must come in for a fair share of favour. Jewelled Girdle is a horse likely to upset any field, while Contract might be in need of a race or two. Mount Vai will be sure of support as will All Blood, Vantoon and General Ruse. In an open race, horses finding most support may include Fireguard Erebus Lustral or Mount Vai STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Six
Grey Honour 8 12 Majority will carry top weight in this race and must be given a show although 10.3 is a lot of weight. Catalogue might come in for support, but at the weight does not impress unduly. Amigo must be given all respect in this race, as he won nicely over this distance at Napier. Flammarion and Royal Bachelor are form horses, especially Flammarion who has had four wins in the last four starts. Rebel Mate' is a good one and is in winning form. Counterblast is a horse who could quite easily win in this field, bufo has not raced for a while. Prince Acre must be given a show, while Besiege is about due for a win. Gay Seton might just be capable of upsetting the top weights and appears the best of the others. Horses finding support, however, may include Flammarion Rebel Mate Amigo or Besiege WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE (Handicap). About three miles
All Irish has been accorded the honour of carrying top weight in the big event, and is sure to make the going tough, but the extra quarter of a mile might prove just a bit too much. Riotous, like All Irish, will set a smart pace for the rest of the field, but here again the distance might tell. John Charles will, of course, receive volumes of support and in view of his Greenlane Steeplechase success with 11.5 on board must be given a great chance. Court Yard is a good one and must be given a show. Power Chief is certain to command support and as they go past the post will not be far away. Everyone will remember the thrilling struggle between Survoy and Power Chief at Auckland and whether or not Power Chief can turn the tables remains to be seen. Survoy is in good order and will go to the barrier carrying the hopes of many. Gold Wren is not to be overlooked, and is certain to make the top weights move. Chile and Slayer are both capable of winning and in an open event, those finding favour may include Survoy John Charles Power Chief TRENTHAM HURDLE One mile and three-quarters.
Recollection 10 5 Silver Sight, who will also, contest the first race on the programme, if started in each race is sure to find support. Curie is in winning form, having been placed in the last three starts. Esteem must be seriously considered and although this horse has not been placed in the last two starts it is a good one, capable of winning in this class. King Rey does not impress, nor doos Inness Lad or Manawatu. Fireguard, of course, is contesting an earlier race and if he starts in that, might not be a runner in the Trentham Handicap. If he is, Fireguard with only 10.5 up must be given a great show. Recollection is a form horse and a good bet. Royal Dance will be sure to find support and should go a long way. Loombination might upset the leaders as 9.10 is not too much for this horse. Ellanui must be given a great show. Those in favour may be Esteem Recollection Royal Dance of Ellanui
WHYTE HANDICAP. One mile. First Division.
Haughty Winner usually ’manages to be in the money at Trentham and should run well in this race. Trench Fight looks a good bet, although he has not raced for some time. Sly Fox must be considered, so must Lowenberg, Meamea, and Monipere. Mataroa is a form horse and should not be far away as they straighten up for the run home. Lazybones and Might will come in for a fair share of public favour. And Rustem, who only has 7.7, might upset the top weights. Those finding support may include Memea Mataroa Sly Fox Second Division.
.the second division, looks a good bet. Whirling does not impress greatly, nor does Lady Montana or Ned Cuttie. Vaimint is a hard horse to beat and is sure to be liked. Quadroon is sure to be popular, and Yours Truly is in winning form as are Skyrena. Kena and Tidewaiter. Mishna has not had much) luck lately and should not trouble the leaders very much. Of the rest Corroboree looks the best and support may come for Maori Song Valmint Quadroon or Yours Truly TE ARO HANDICAP (Hack conditions). One mile.
El Meyncll must be favoured in thisl event and with only 9.8 up should not' be far away at the finish. Centrepoise is a form runner and he won over this distance at Hawke’s Bay on June 17. Verey Lights is a winner lately and is expected to run a good race. Windsor Chief scored a win and a second in his last two starts. Colfort does not look good enough nor does Selkirk. Little Robin or Warehi. Le Touquet has been running well and can be expected to be in the hunt. Hutana won ..at Waipa but the distance might knock that horse. Bow Street has not been among the winners of late nor has Vocal. Larwood, in view of his recent victory at Otaki. will be sure to command support. Happy Heels is a horse who has been running into third place of late and is about due for a win. Colonel Bogey' is sure to have follow < ers. and Haile Selassie should command a fair per cent of support. Horses who may be liked are El Meynell Centrepoise Larwood of Verey Light l :
