Price, dressed in a Maori chief's mat and covered with tattoo, performed the initiation of 12 new members at the fifth korero of the Hamua Tribe
on Saturday night. Past Chiefs” W. Iggulden and E. J. Jenkins received the new members, and Past Chief J. A. Kennedy spoke words of wisdom to each candidate as he took the oath of Savagery. The following were the members to go through the initiation ceremony:—Messrs C. J.' Curtin, D. Couper, A. Card, G. C. Gaze, R. Glen, W. A. Jones, J. B. Mcpherson, G. W. McMillan, A. E. Steele, H.- Hirst, lan Cameron and R. E. Cottle. Savage S. Barber was installed as Chief of the evening, and carried out his duties in a most efficient manner. Under the conductorship of Savage C. W. Kerry, the club’s orchestra played two items, “In a Pagoda” and “Annetta.” A bracket of vocal solos by Savages J. B. Mcpherson received hearty applause. Past Chief W. Iggulden volunteered to fill a breach in the programme with an elocutionary item at short notice, and at his ripe age his rendering of the lengthy piece, “The Man from Snowy River,” received a tremendous ovation, and as an encore he told, with the broadest of Scottish accent, the famous story of “Macpherson’s Whusky.” A thumb-nail sketch, “Efficiency,” by two members of the Dramatic Club, Savages R. Glen and J. Brodie, was the next item. Deputy-Chief V. Wilton called for the introduction of visitors, who included Palefaces Geo. Bilderbeck, J. K. Johnston, O. Hatton (Masterton), R. Marsh (Hastings), J. Walker (Wellington), A. Rigarlsford (Wellington) and W. Howan (East Coast). The adjournment to the Buttery Hatch featured on the programme as item number seven, and during this session Counsellor J. Connell proposed the toast of “The Visitors,” which was replied to by Palefaces R. Marsh and A. Rigarlsford. Chief Pickering announced the toast of “Those Initiated,” and Savage G. C. Gaze mounted “the block” and replied on behalf of those who had braved the ordeal.
Upon the resumption of the programme the Orchestra again supplied two items, “Narcissus” and "Sweetly Dreaming.” "Small Talk.” a sketch, was next presented by the following members 'of the Dramatic Club: — Messrs F. Henry, O. Hemmingsen, F. J. Coleman, J. A. Kennedy, J. A. Marshall, R. Glen and J. Brodie. Savage O. Hemmingsen sang two vocal solos, which were indeed well received. Another thumb-nail sketch. “Have You Ever Been Had?” was presented by Savages R. Cottle, W. Russell, N. Flemming, J. Brodie and F. Coleman. The stage management for the evening was in the hands of Messrs W. G. Perry and P. Hancock'. It was announced that the Carterton raid would take place on Saturday, July 22.
