Mr A. F. McSkimming, Auckland, has been appointed to judge the elocutionary and literary section of the Greymouth competitions festival in August. Mr A. Mclntosh, formerly of the Greytown and Bidwill cheese factories, started duties today as manager of the Umuataroa cheese factory, Dannevirke. The friends of Mr and Mrs C. H. Norman, of Te Whanga, Masterton, will regret to hear of the death of one of their twin sons, which occurred yesterday eleven hours after birth. Tributes to the national and other services rendered by the late Sir Thomas Wil ford and the late Colonel George Mitchell were paid by the House of Representatives at its sitting yesterday. Sir James Hutchison, editor of the “Otago Daily Times," and Lady Hutchison, who are returned from a visit to England, are passengers on the Wanganella which left Sydney yesterday for Wellington. Messrs Raymond F. Minson (Christchurch), J. A. Clements (Wellington), F. P. Callaghan (Palmerston North). Townsend, Hand. Thomas. Ashby and McMillan (Wellington) are among guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Mr and Mrs Naylor, formerly of Masterton but now of Auckland, paid a brief visit to Masterton yesterday on their way to Wellington. Mr Naylor was a prominent rifle shot in Masterton when he resided here some twenty years ago. A welcome was extended to Mr L. A. Hutton, the newly appointed Fire Insurance Companies' representative on the Masterton Fire Board, by the chairman. Mr N. T. B. Beetham. at last night's quarterly meeting of the board. Official advice received by the secretary of the Wairarapa Badminton Association states that Mr Phil. Hawksworth, Masterton, has been appointed captain of the New Zealand Badminton Test team to tour Australia next month. The death occurred on Thursday of Mr Leonard Sowman. Turakina. aged 58. Mr Sowman. who was, for a number of years, in the tobacconist trade, was well known in Wellington. About foui’ years ago he went to take up business in Hastings and some months ago left Hastings for Turakina. He leaves a widow and family.
