WOMEN’S AUXILIARY. "‘THE CHALLENGE OF THE EAST.” A largely attended meeting of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary of the Methodist Church was held in the Methodist Schoolroom yesterday afternoon, Miss V. Ja'ckson being in the Chair. After the usual devotional period and ‘routine business had been dealt with a dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs C. Beale and Miss Beale. Mrs Jones, a returned Missionary from India gave a most enjoyable address on “The Challenge of the East.” While in India, Mrs Jones’s particular sphere of activity was among the women, and the speaker had many interesting incidents 'to relate of her work in the Punjab. The Indian women do not as a rule take part in local affairs, their work being in the home with the children, while the men go out to meetings, etc. When the missionaries arrived, however, all this was changed and now the women' have their own organisations run by their own women. Many people living in the jungle had not seen a white face, and when the Missionary first visit them they are very much afraid, and hide among the sugar Canes. They think the “white face” is a spirit, and will not allow the children to come ' near for fear of the “evil eye.” But i little by little these people are coming : to trust the white man and learn to ap- \ preciate what they are trying to do for them. A vote of thanks to the speaker and / the Doxology -closed the "meeting. j
