CENTENNIAL DUTY
EVERYBODY CAN HELP. “It is not too much to expect that every man and woman in this country will be able to say within the next few months, T have done something for the Centennial’,” states the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, in “New /Zealand Centennial News.” “Whatever is done, by individuals and organisations, will not be more than the pioneers deserve. “It is good to see in some of the Centennial zones that public-spirited, na-tional-minded men and women do feel that, they must act in a manner worthy of the pioneers’ unselfishness. They have generously given money, material, and service for Centennial memorials and celebrations. These gifts and cheerful ’working-bees’ have eased the charge on public funds in some localities. It is hoped heartily that this effective kind of voluntary help will spread through all sections of all districts. “A very pleasant aspect of the Centennial preparations is in the tree-plan-ting activities of many districts. Long after the wonderful pageantry and other spectacles and the great Exhibition have passed away, the trees will be living reminders of the completion of New Zealand’s first century as a British country and the inauguration of another era of progress. Between now and the end of the Centennial period, every adult New Zealander should be able to say truly, ‘I have planted a tree,’ or 'I have helped to plant a tree.’ ”
