PERSONAL
The condition of Mr John Morrison, of Blairlogie, who was seriously injurjured in an aeroplane accident at the Hood Aerodrome last week, is reported to be showing an improvement. The retirement after 47 years of service of Mr A. J. Graham as organist and choirmaster of St. Andrew's Church, Palmerston North, was marked by the presentation of a testimonial and a cheque at a gathering of about 250 members of the church held in St. Andrew’s Hall.
The Rev. E. R. Davids, a Dutch Catholic priest, arrived at Wellington by the Rangitiki yesterday. Father Davids has been engaged in missionary work since 1916, when he began in South America. In 1926 he went to the Cook Islands, and has been there ever since, with the exception of the holiday in his homeland, from which he has just returned. He will now resume his work in the islands. A German Jew, aged 28, Dr. H. W. Asch, who has qualified in Germany as a doctor of medicine, arrived at Wellington yesteday by the Rangitiki, and will go to Pukehuia, North Auckland, to engage in farm work. He stated that he has to do this because he has not the finance that would enable him to take the three-year course in Otago, which is now required of doctors with foreign qualifications, who wish to practise in New Zealand. The appointment of Mr R. McKeen, Government member for Wellington South, as Chairman of Committees, was formally made in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr McKeen’s appointment was moved by the acting-Leader of the House, Mr Fraser, who said Mr McKeen had had the necessary experience and ability to fill the office with distinction. Mr McKeen was congratulated by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, and in reply briefly returned thanks.
The Prime Minister, Mr Savage, though much improved after his indisposition this week, has not yet taken his place in the House of Representatives. The Acting-Leader of the House, Mr Fraser, has been taking his place. It is expected that Mr Savage will be able to resume his official duties by the beginning of next week. Sympathy with the Prime Minister in his indisposition was expressed yesterday during the debate on the Imprest Supply Bill by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, who wished Mr Savage a speedy return to health. The death has occurred in Palmerston North of Mr James Arthur Cruickshank, formerly a prominent member of the police force, which he joined in 1898, serving continuously till his retirement in 1930. Mr Cruickshank came when 11 years of age to the Dominion, his parents taking up farming in North Otago. He followed the same vocation till he joined the police force, being at first stationed in Dunedin. He served at Bluff for about seven years, and for a similar period was clerk of the Warden’s Court and clerk of the Magistrate’s Court in Ross. His next move was to take charge of the Wellington South police district, and it was then that he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. The last shift he made was to take control of the Onchunga district, where he also acted as clerk of the Magistrate’s Court till his retirement. Mr Cruickshank’s living relatives are Mrs Alex Anderson (Palmerston North), Messrs Arthur Cruickshank (Commissioner of Transport on the Gold Coast. Africa),' Thomas Cruickshank (Masterton), and David J. Cruickshank (Wellington).
