ROAD SAFETY

INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS. NOVEL SCHEME ADOPTED. t (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, June 28. A scheme to inculcate into the minds of pupils the necessity of care when using the streets has been introduced to the Wanganui Intermediate School by the Principal, Mr W. E. Fossette, similar to that now operating in Carterton. The scheme was put into operation yesterday, in co-operation with the chief traffic inspector, Mr H. I. Tipper. Bicycles were first inspected and then each pupil had to ride over a temporary pedestrian crossing being used by other pupils, give the correct signal or stop as the necessity arose and generally observe the rules of the road. Having successfully passed the test pupils were given a licence to ride by the headmaster, which also carried with it a certificate of fitness for the bicycle. The school has its own traffic controllers, whose duty it is to report pupils who commit breaches of the by-laws. These are dealt with by a specially constituted court of school pupils and penalties are imposed such as endorsing or suspending a licence and instructing in road safety, the proceedings being made as attractive as possible and combined with a certain amount of humorous element, the fundamental prim ciple of road-safety being predomin' ant.
