BASKETBALL

SECONDARY SCHOOLS MATCH WIN FOR WAIRARAPA COLLEGE. A keen game of basketball was witnessed yesterday afternoon on the College ground wherf the Wairarapa College A team met the Palmerston North Technical School. The teams were played on to the court by the College Pipe Band. Both teams commenced play in a very quick manner. Wairarapa scored the first goal but this was followed by a goal for the visitors. For five minutes each team alternated with goals making play both exciting and inters esting for the spectators. Each team was setting the pace and giving a good exhibition of basketball. Interceptions by Fay Norris were a feature of the game at this stage and the goal of Joyce Berkahn, who was shooting with great accuracy. Palmerston North seemed to be very sure of their shots and Wairarapa made several successful attempts. Connie Shearer here saved the situation for Wairarapa when the ball was down the Palmerston North end by brilliant and clever defensive work. At half-time the score was 8 to 6 in favour of Wairarapa. In the second spell Wairarapa opened the play arid scored four consecutive goals. The positional play of the Wairarapa girls was at this stage the deciding factor and the short quick passes seemed to unnerve their opponents. Wairarapa had "hanged their tactics the second spell and Doreen Dagg showed well. The Wairarapa team gave a pleasing and spectacular game. Palmerston North re-commenc-ed scoring and this gave their team renewed confidence. Maureen Bevan, a Manawatu representative, with her experience and steadying influence tended to pull her team together. She was well supported by Joan Sciaccia in the centre. Essie Henderson showed some fine interceptions during the spell. For College, Joan Russell was always on the spot supporting Margaret McLaren on every occasion. The forward third for Wairarapa, D. Shoosmith, P. Baskiville and D. Dagg ■made an effective combination and played splendidly. The final score was: Wairarapa, 21; Palmerston North, 12. The referee was Miss P. Kilmister. The teams were as follow: — Palmerston North: Maureen Bevan (captain), Noreen Siddells (vice-cap-tain), Joyce Berkaln, Joan Astwood, Phyllis Bray, Waitohi Te Awe Awe, Joan Sciaccia, Essie Henderson, Fay Norris. Wairarapa College: Pat Baskiville( captain), Maureen Carroll (vice-captain), Connie Shearer, Kath. Ross, Margaret McLaren, Elizabeth McLaren, Joan Russell, Doreen Dagg ; Irene Shoosmith. In the evening a most enjoyable social was held in the Assembly Hall, at which the visitors were guests. Games and competitions were held and dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Pool’s Orchestra. The programme included an excellent drill item by pupils of V commercial form, a quartette by Nancy Colton, Berris Perrin, Evlyn and Rita McGovern. An excellent humorous item by W. J. Wallis, a splendid recitation by Gwendoline Hancox, a neatly executed military tap dance by Valmai Price, and much appreciated items by D. Tooby and his mouth-organ band. A delightful number, “Three Little Girls From School,” by the IV A girls was greatly appreciated. Mr R. J. Fowler was a capable M.C., and kept proceedings moving merrily.
