TEACHING PROFESSION
STRENGTH AIMED AT WILL TAKE YEARS TO REACH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. June 28. “Dsepite the fact that 800 new teachers are available from four training colleges each year it_will be from eight to 10 years before the profession in New Zealand reaches the strength aimed at,” said the president of the New Zealand Teachers’ Institute, Mr D. C. Pryor, today. Mr Pryor, who is at present on a tour of the South Island emphasised that it was the aim of both the Government and the Institute to reduce the size of classes in schools. The greatest step in this direction had been the staffing of schools on peak rolls instead of on an average roll as in the past. This had absorbed many additional teachers, but little more could be done until more teachers were available. Mr Pryor pointed out that of the 800 teachers coming from the training colleges each year, half were required to till the places of those retiring from the service.
