DRAMA LEAGUE

ARRANGEMENTS FOR FESTIVAL. SENIOR AND JUNIOR PLAYS. An executive meeting of the Wairarapa Drama League was held yesterday evening, there being a full attendance of members, with Miss O. R. Sutherland in the chair. A financial statement regarding the recent Drama School was presented by the treasurer, and a grant for heating and lighting was made to the St. Matthew’s Board of Governors. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs M. Cleghorn and to the Board of Governors for many kindnesses’ during the school. Entries for the forthcoming Drama Festival were received by the meeting. The fact that eleven entries have been handed in is an indication of the continued popularity of the Drama League’s festivals. It should be noted that at these festivals the competitive element is not stressed at all. but the main idea is the great benefit received by all players from the experience gained and from the helpful criticisms of the judge. The eleven entries are divided into eight senior and three junior, and considerable discussion took place on the time when the junior plays should be heard. Finally it was decided to run a junior festival on the afternoon of Saturday, July 15. and to have the senior plays on Monday and Tuesday, July 17 and 18. Mr Miles Wright, of Wellington, has been asked to judge the senior plays, and Mr E. N. Hogben. principal of the Dannevirke High School, the juniorplays. The executive made arrangements for the festival as follows:— Programme arrangements, Mrs E. J. Rich and Miss O. R. Sutherland; front of house, Messrs V. Joseph and J. Kennedy; publicity, Miss O. R. Sutherland: programmes, Miss M. Dwyer; rehearsals. Mrs E. J. Rich and Miss P. Jordan; stage managers. Mr Alan Green and Miss M. Dwyer. All producers are asked to hand in at once to the secretary, Miss P. Jordan. a copy of the play (for the judge), a plan of the stage-setting for the stage managers, and full particulars of cast and producer (for publicity purposes). The admission prices to the festival will be the usual popular ones of 2s and Is Gd. with Is for school parties, and Is 6d and Is for Saturday afternoon.
