Mr J. A. Nash has been elected the first life-member of the Palmerston North Bowling Club. Mr M. J. Casey has been elected president of the New Zealand Bowling Association and Mr A. F. Spiller as secretary. ( The engagement is announced of Betty, only daughter of Mr and Mrs K. E. Welch, Makora Road, Masterton, to James Herbert, second son of Mr and Mrs H. Henderson, Te Whiti, Masterton.
Mr Arthur Morton, Egmont Village, was unanimously re-elected chairman of the National Dairy Association Limited at. a meeting yesterday of directors. This is the 29th consecutive year that Mr Morton has been elected to this position. Mr L. B. Wall is +o be nominated by the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The other representatives from the west coast district on the electoral committee are Mr J. Knight (Feilding A. and P. Association), and Mr T. Currie (Wanganui A. and P. Association).
The death has occurred of Captain William Ross, in his eighty-ninth year, states a Press Association message from Auckland. He was well known in the South Pacific trade and was one of the last links with the days of sail. Captain Ross was famous for his association with the barquentine Ysabel, in which he traded in the Pacific for 22 years. At the ceremonial opening of Parliament yesterday the Minister of Edu cation, Mr Fraser, acted as Leader of the House of Representatives in the absence through indisposition of the Prime Minister, Mr Savage. Though a substantial improvement was reported yesterday in the condition of Mr Savage, who has a slight attack of influenza, he was not sufficiently recovered to resume his duties. The appointment of Mr R. S. Parker, Sydney, as lecturer in public administration at Victoria University College has been approved by the College council. Mr Parker's appointments follows the recent establishment of a department of political science and public administration at the College. Mr Parker will commence his duties in September. He graduated B.Econ. at the University of Sydney, taking first-class honours in public administration and economics and was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship to investigate the problems of recruitment in the Public Service in the Commonwealth. Several executive appointments in the Post and Telegraph Department were announced last evening by the Postmaster-General, Mr Jones. Mr J. G. Young, deputy direqtor-general, has been appointed to the position of dir-ector-general in place of Mr G. McNamara, who recently retired on superannuation. Mr W. R. Newall, second deputy director-general, is appointed to the position of deputy director-general in succession to Mr Young. The following are appointed to the position of divisional' director. General Post Office: —Mr S. A. Ogilvie, divisional principal. General Post Office. Mr L. L. Hills, chief inspector and principal staff division, General Post Office. Mr J. Madden, chief postmaster, Wellington.
