CARTERTON BRIGADE
SERVICE BEYOND BOROUGH CHARGE TO BE MADE. COUNCIL AGREES TO REQUEST. j ("Times-Age” Special.) Considering that those persons residing outside the borough boundary should pay for any services rendered by the brigade, a deputation from the ■ Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, headed by Superintendent R. P. WakeJin. waited on last night’s meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, with a request that the council as the controlling body should move in this mat • ter. Mr Wakelin pointed out that the calls made by the brigade inside and outside of the borough were about SOSO. This meant that those outside the borough boundary were gaining the ' full benefit of the brigade’s equipment and service .for nothing. In many cases, not even a. donation or letter of thanks was forthcoming. , "Since obtaining the Dennis pump > the brigade has attended fires 21 miles away, but we now consider 2 miles is ample distance,” said Mr Wakelin. “Surely £l,OOO worth of equipment and the services of eighteen firemen if necessary is worth at least a donation,” he continued. Mr Wakelin also stated that some large firms made an annual donation to the brigade. The, Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner: “I understand then that it is the wish of the brigade for us to make a definite charge outside the borough, with a ' radius limit of 2 miles.” Superintendent Wakelin: “That is our request. We, of course, do not wish to have anything to do with the collecting of such fees.” Mr Taverner congratulated the brigade on their efficiency in the recent Red Star Service Station fire. On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to accede to the brigade’s request and a scale of charges will be set out by the finance committee.
