MATERNITY BENEFITS
ATTITUDE OF MEDICAL PROFESSION. Al /['l-RATION SUGGESTED IN TARANAKI.' (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH. June 27. There is stated to be a prospect of an alteration in the attitude of members of the British Medical Association toward the maternity benefits section of the Social Security scheme. The Taranaki division is to meet to consider correspondence on the matter from the New Zealand branch. No details of the proposition are available till divisions throughout the Dominion have considered it and communicated their views to Wellington, whence, if necessary, a statement will be issued within the next week or two. It is presumed that the suggestion by the branch is of a different nature from that submitted to the Government some weeks ago. There is a desire on. the part of some doctors, it is understood, for prompt settlement of points of difference between thd Government and the B.M.A. NO WEAKENING. ACCORDING TO WELLINGTON AUTHORITY. (Rv Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The New Plymouth message was referred to a member of the national health insurance committee of the B.M.A. last night. He said that the present position was the same as it had always been, namely, that the medical profession as a whole wished to assist in the maternity scheme provided that the scheme did not lead to a deterioration of the standard of service, or interfere with the liberty of the patient in the choice of doctor. There was no weakening on the part of the B.M.A. in its views on those points.
