CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE How Horses Are Running FORM DISPLAYED DURING WEEK-END TRENTHAM MEETING DRAWING CLOSER
(By
“CARBINE.”)
With the Trentham meeting drawing closer, considerable interest is being taken in the form of the horsed engaged. Some rather impressive form was witnessed at the three race meetings over the weekend. The following ' is a brief summary of how the horses ran in the various events: WAIPA Andrew Kay’ Memorial Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase: Gadger, who has not been going so well of late, came to the fore with a vengeance in this race. He ran into- third position at the turn and outstayed the rest of the field. Lucidus just managed to' hang on to fill third position, while Wasp, who came second, battled all the way. Royal Nation was interfered with at a time when he looked to be going well, and in a handy position. Arapuni Hack Handicap: British Nation was handy throughout the entire six furlongs and finished strongly. However, Little Ruse gave him a run for his money, and was only passed over the last fifty yards. Star Vaal was closer at the end than at any other time. Ora King tired. Tea Gong jumped out early, but after a couple of furlongs failed to show any pep. Woodstock Stakes: Considering it was his first attempt over a middle distance Maori Song’s win was a good one. He secured a good position early and was well up all the way. Gay Rose turned on a better performance than for some time. Du Maurier ran a good race and seems to be returning to form.
W. G. Parkes Steeples: Brilliant jumping on the part of Saint Musk gave that horse a splendid win in this event. Had Pyrenees not hit two fences the last time round he would have been hard to beat, as at the time he was stepping out nicely. Arapuni Handicap: A fine finishing run gave Hutana this event. Hutana was never prominent until reaching the straight. He seems to be striking form. Bronze Moth had every chance but could only fill third position. Erlick went well but could not go with the winner over the last distance.
Orakau Hurdles: Lady England had to be well ridden to win this event. General Rue, who filled second berth, is jumping more confidently,, and King Rey appeared to be hampered when Siwell, Gadger and Chikara fell. Paterangi Handicap: Besiege, who was away better than usual, was soon tp the fore in this race. At the finish nothing looked like touching him. Two lengths away was Royevrus. who had run a good race. Hairini Hack Handicap: At the halfmile Erlick, who had run second in the second division of the Arapuni Hack Handicap was in the lead and managed to keep there all the way. Raceline ran a good race and will be Worth watching. Nuipapa battled Solidly all the way. ASHBURTON Hinds Hurdle Handicap: Always well placed, Recollection scored impressively in this race. He wore down Mount Vai in the last few strides, although the latter put up a much better race than expected. A bad jump at the last fence spoilt Dropped Catch’s chance, but he would not have beaten the winner. Winter Stakes: Sir Gladstone was never seriously challenged in this race and won nicely. Sir Gladstone is a big horse, and although five years old did not do any racing until a few months ago. Neptune tried about a furlong from home, but was not classy enough. ; Mayfield Hack Handicap: By winning this race Maroha scored his first win this season. He had the race in hand from the early stages. Knight Commander kept within striking distance but on the run home could not breach the gap.
I Dromore Steeplechase: This event was full of incidents. Cottingham went first followed by Culverden, then Sunny Comet. Wexford Bridge stopped badly at the obstacle and running off appeared to cause Court Yard to fall; Redolent fell over Court Yard. Wexford Bridge eventually completed the course to fill fourth place. When Chile seemed to have the race in hand, Uncle Jim came and headed him with a final burst just as they flashed past the post. Moreton Hack Handicap: Considering his solid weight Phenomenal put up a sound performance in this race. He should do well in open company. Locknit was in good form, giving the winner a good fight for the verdict. The Wrecker had every chance but ■faded at the finish. Maronan Handicap: Striking ground to her liking, Lady Leigh won comfortably. Land Raid with a light load aboard was always there, while Lazybones and Petersham disappointed.OTAKI ' Pukehou Hack Hurdles: Lustral scored a decisive win in this event. He went past the pacemaker All Blood about half a mile from home. Erebus was with the winner at the last fence, but Lustral finished stronger. Chat who ran third gave an impressive performance and will be worth watching. Misurina did not run anything like expected. Waikanae Hack Scurry: Saxton Tor, who scored in this race, looks a good thing. Valiant Lady hung on well and Sir Crusoe, who failed to begin well, was going better at the finish. Ta Timi Kara Handicap: Mataroa won decisively. He ran very strongly at the correct end. Rustem was with them all the way, but could not make the grade at the finish. Corroboree finished fast. Tidewaiter ran a good race and looks to be coming back to form. Might reached the front early but did, not run on.
Rangiuru Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase: Lactose did not appear in the van until near the finish, but when he arrived he outstayed the rest. Lady Callaghan put up a very poor showing. Thrasher was in charge about a mile from the judge’s box, but could not cope with Lactose.
Taipu Handicap: No doubt the handling of Yours Truly by A. Jenkins had much to do with that horse’s success. Saki was unfortunate in being hampered coming through, otherwise he might have been in the money. Sporting Gift went well. Waikanae Hack Scurry: Classform stuck on well to cross first in this race. Wings of Song commenced well but weakened at the end to let Peach King through. Colibri was last away. Ohau Hack Handicap: Larwood displayed rare form to come home in this event; so did the second horse, Wee Pat. It is some time since Wee Pat has gone so well. El Meynell failed to line up and was left. Colonel Bogey looked the goods on entering the straight but was badly hampered. Tainui Hack Handicap: Colincamps won this race really well. He was with the leaders at the start but eventually faded away. However on entering the straight he came through nicely and crossed first going away. Liberals Mint and Shining-Hour showed good form. The latter tried to win all the way and is rapidly approaching top form. RACING FIXTURES July I—Oamaru.1 —Oamaru. July I—Dannevirke Hunt. July 4,6, B— Wellington. July 15—Waimate District Hunt.
