The annual ball of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers Association was held in the King’s Theatre, last evening, and was a brilliant success. Early in the evening visitors began to arrive from all parts of the district, and before 9 o’clock the dancing space on the floor was filled to capacity, showing the popularity of this gathering. It is a ball that is always eagerly looked forward to by the R.S.A. men/who foregather to renew old acquaintances, and in many instances revive old memories of the war. The hall was like a fairyland with many coloured electric bulbs intermingled with miniature flags and other decorations. Together with the beautiful dresses worn by the ladies, the whole made a gay scene. The lounge which was situated under the balcony was well patronised by many who preferred to sit out rather than dance the whole programme. The floor had been specially prepared and the M’s.C., Messrs H. Bain, H. J. Rathbone, Les Fairbrother and F. Taplin, Mrs V. J. Ashton and Miss J. Lorenzen kept a well selected dance programme going merrily. The music was played by Tom Udy’s dance band of eight instruments. The supper which was presided over by a strong ladies’ committee. Prior to the ball opening the Wairarapa Pipe Band enlivened proceedings by playing spirited music from the town to the dance hall, and upon arrival they continued their playing inside the hall for a time to the delight of all present. Much appreciated extras were played by the Pipe Band, Miss Mary Herrick and Mr Tom Udy. The 1939 R.S.A. Ball can undoubtedly be classed the best yet held and the funds of the Carterton branch should be very considerably augmented by it. The duties of secretary to the ball were carried out by Mr Gibb Johnston, and he was ably supported by a hard working committee of ‘‘Diggers.’! . BADMINTON MATCH A CLOSE FINISH. A keen, friendly spirit of competition marked the visit of St Matthew’s Badminton Club to play the Carterton Club in the State Theatre last night.
