Mr and Mrs W. G. K. Wiggins have returned to Greytown after a motor tour of the North Island. Mrs Wilder and Miss Connelly (Waipukurau) and Mr A. McDonald, of Martinborough, are among guests at the Hotel Midland. Masterton.

The many friends of Mr B. Falloon, of the N.Z. Railways clerical stall', will regret to learn that he has had to enter the Masterton Hospital in order to undergo a serious operation. Guests at the Empire Hotel, Master - ton include Mrs and Miss S. Nesbett, of Wanganui (and formerly of Masterton) and Mr and Mrs J. A. Miller (Wellington ).

At yesterday's meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union a motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr James Watson, Wairarapa Provincial Secretary.

The death of Mr John Hickey, of Hinds, in his hundredth year, is reported in a Press Association telegram from Ashburton. Mr Hickey was born in Ireland and came to New Zealand as a young man. being one of the first residents of the Hinds district, where he gained a reputation for fine work as a fencer. Mrs Hickey died last September, aged 88. Mr John Woolf, of Herbert Street. Masterton, has been appointed Secre-tary-Organiser of the Wairoa (Hawke’s Bay) Centennial Celebrations. Mr Woolf was selected from applicants from the whole of New Zealand and has already commenced his new duties. Wairoa aims at raising £3OOO for building a municipal swimming pool as the town’s centennial memorial.

Partly as a result of the import restrictions and an anticipated decline in trade between Canada and New Zealand. the Chnadian Government has decided to abolish temporarily the office of assistant trade commissioner in the Dominion. Mr P. R. Bower, who has been Assistant Canadian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, with head-quarters in Auckland, for the past two and a half years, has received notice of his transfer to Sydney, where he will occupy a position similar to that in New Zealand.
