OTAKI
MATAROA WINS CHIEF EVENT. SPRINT GOES TO YOURS TRULY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OTAKI, June 24. Some rather impressive form was seen at the second winter meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club today. The total betting for the day was £17,142 10s (win £7936; place £9206 10). This is an increase of £2806 10s on the King’s Birthday last year.
The- stipendiary steward (Mr B, N. , Sandilands) was fairly busy during, the day. R. W. Savage, rider of Lustral in the hurdle race, was censured for not steering a straight course at the last hurdle, and G,. P. Dowrick, rider of Chat, was censured for not keep.ing his mount up to the barrier at the start. Corroboree lost his position in the middle stages of the Timi Kara Handicap, and it was found this was due to Liane dropping back on him when her saddle broke. An inquiry was held into the interference to Colonel Bogey by Larwood in the Ohau Hack. It was admitted by Dowrick, the rider of Larwood, but the committee decided that it was accidental and contributed to by Dow i rick’s cap coming down over his eyes. The cause of El Meynell getting left in the same race was found to be due to him pulling sideways as the barrier rose, and his rider being unable to straighten him up.
