BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION COMPETITIONS KEEN GAMES ON SATURDAY. A AND B GRADE RESULTS. The results of Wairarapa Basketball Association matches played on Saturday were— A grade:— . College B defeated Collegians, 16/12. lona defeated High School Old Girls, 13/4. Stars defeated College A, 18/7. B grade’" - ~ Belvedere defeated Stars B, 29/10. " lona defeated College C, 40/6. College Colts defeated College D, 13/5. t Masterton Hospital beat Greytown Hospital, 29/11. Keen games were witnessed on Saturday. College B thoroughly deserved their win, every member of the team giving her best. The forward third has a good understanding and play well into position. Dora Hathaway, playing in the centre for College, gave a good display of quickness. She was well supported by Joan Russell, who although she gets away and opens up the game is just a little slow in getting rid of the ball. It was pleasing to see Joan Gemmell playing a good game, her shooting being well up to standard, several long shots going in the ring. Violet Hendry did some good work in the centre. Isabel Stevenson plays with steadiness and opens up the game. The defence in Collegians seems the weakest third, the girls not being forceful enough. Both the teams were evenly matched and gave a good display of a clean game, although field play was inclined to be a little slow. lona turned the tables on High School Old Girls in this second round. Good passing in lona goal seemed to be the deciding factor. P. Kilmister was well on her shqt. Although onehanded shooting is not advocated she very seldom failed to ring the shot. The centres were well matched and both sides played well. Ruth Eastwood made some good interceptions, and Jean Hoar threw some good shots. lona were without the services of Maureen Eastwood, but P. Hanley played well and combined without the centres well. Her centre play has improved and she is definitely superior in this third than the forward third. Although College A were beaten by Stars the match was played in a great spirit and both sides depended on team work and not individual effort. Stars passed well and jumped for the ball at the right time and when needed. College seemed to misjudge distances and in the defence end this was most noticeable. Monica Gadsby and Pat Baskville seemed to be evenly matched, and both girls fought strenuously. M. Gadsby has the knack of intercepting and she is well supported by her team-mate. A. Burgess, who is a hard-worker, M. Rutherford, for Stars / centres played an excellent game. In the second half of the game College tired and the game ended 18/7. On the B grade matches Belvedere scored a win over Star B. Stars were two short, but played a plucky game throughout, and fought till the last minute of the game. J. Stains played a good game, her shooting taking a feature. Her field play needs to be a lit)tie faster. D. Dickason worked hard in the centre, and C. House supported her, there being only two in this third. Belvedere have improved in their game, and it was pleasing to see their team giving short passes. D. Garrett played well for Belvedere. lona B had an easy win against College C. This team gives a good exhibition at times of a high B grade standard. Next year this team should play senior A grade. The fact that they have not lost a game to date substantiates ’the contention that everything depends on team work. C. Talbot has a good eye, and seldom misses. J. Bannister and B. Reilly played well. In spite of College C’s unfortunate reverses the team spirit is most excellent.

College Colts which consists of all third form girls scored a win over the College D team. Both teams played well, but the forward third in the D team failed completely.

There is good reason to believe that, in future years Wairarapa will have some good players and the experience these younger players get in playing in outside competition will be for the betterment of the game.

An extremely interesting match was seen between Masterton Hospital and Greytown Hospital. The game, which was played at a fast pace throughout, was won by the Masterton nurses by 29 to 11. The Masterton Hospital centre was very good, especially H. Hamilton and C. Moylan, who showed excellent combination. It was a good vigorous game with quick passing, though there was too much stepping with the ball. Among the forwards, P. Turner shot well for Masterton Hospital, and N. Cook, for Greytown Hospital, showed good style and accuracy. Too much passing among Greytown forwards lost them the ball, as the Masterton defence was strong. The passing was often too long. For Masterton, J. Arnold shot some good goals. The Masterton score shows that the Masterton nurses have improved their shooting a great deal. The Representative A and B grades will practice Thursday from G. 30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium.
