The standard of pig breeding in the Wairarapa is becoming higher each year and the success achieved .by Wairarapa breeders at the National Dairy Show is justification for the formation of a pig breeders’ club in the Wairarapa. The position of clubs in the inter-group competition resulted as under: —Te Arakura, 399 points, 1; Mauriceville, 372 points, 2; Glen Oroua, 370 points, 3; Parkvale, 348 points, 4; Norsewood, 337 points, 5; Kopane, 297 points, 6. In this bacon competition, the history is known of every individual pig from birth to slaughter. The pigs are weighed at 3 weeks and 8 weeks old. Points are given as shown above for the number weaned in the litter, average weight at 8 weeks and for growth rate from birth to slaughter. In the inter-club group the best four pigs from four individual exhibitors are taken.

Judged on carcase quality only, i.e., eliminating the points already mentioned and also those for weight suitability, the results were as follows: — W. C. Scott, Glen Oroua, Tamworth, 72 points, 1; A. E. Milne, Glen Oroua, Tamworth,'7l points, 2; W. A. Davison, Rongotea and E. T. Bliss, Parkvale,

Carterton, Berkshire, 70' points, 3; J. Sorensen, Te Arakura, Berkshire, 69 > points, 5; O. Brazendale, Dalefield, Tamworth-Tamworth cross, 68 .points, 6; W. Dugnid, Ohau, Berkshire-Tam-worth cross, 67 points, 7; W. A. Davison, Rongotea. Berkshire, 66 points, 8. The above records show that Wairarapa and Bush districts are among thi best breeders of pigs for bacon and pork exported to England, and the Wairarapa Pig Breeders' Association is working on the right lines to foster this important industry. EARLY MORNING FIRE AT SERVICE STATION. A prolonged alarm was sounded on the Carterton Fire Brigade siren at 3.45 o’clock this morning, the cause being a fire at Mr Gill’s Red Star Service Station. The cause of the outbreak at present is not ascertainable. The alarm was given by Mr W. S. Montgomery and the brigade answered the call very smartly and although the building was well in flames when they arrived a very good save was made. Mr G. Gill, who sleeps on the premises, was aroused from his sleep by smoke and the crackling of the fire in the building and he was only able to secure an overcoat and a pair of shoes and make a hurried escape through a back window —escape from the front door being impossible as the building was well alight. He was lucky indeed to have got out without suffering injury. Mr Gill is a heavy loser, as the whole of his belongings were destroyed. The only clothes left to him were his pyjama suit and his overcoat which he had left the building

in. The office and sleeping quarters were badly gutted and the ladies’ cloak room damaged by smoke and water. Some motor tyres were, damaged and oil and cotton waste were also burnt. The petrol tanks and bowsers were not extensively damaged the paint on them being scorched. A remarkable thing was that ten four-gallon tins of kerosene stored in the ceiling of the building, although the wire handles were melted off the tins did not explode. The damage is estimated at £SOO. . Heavy North-West Wind. A very-heavy north-west wind blew with terrific force in Carterton in the early hours of Sunday morning, but no serious damage is reported. Borough Council Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will be held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night. Amongst the business to be dealt with will be the levying of rates for the year 1939-40. Funeral of Mr O. Bobb. The funeral of the late Mr Oliver Bubb, an old and respected resident of Carterton, took place on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended, the cortege including many old settlers. The Rev. H. White, Methodist Minister, conducted the service at the house and also at the graveside in the absence of the Presbyterian Minister. Many beautiful wreaths were received, demonstrating the high esteem in which the late Mr Bubb was held. The pall-bearers were Messrs S. Dalgleis F. Foreman, C. Gawith (Longbush). J. Nunn, J. Booth (Gladstone), and W. D. Fisher (Homebush).
