ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

CONCERT TOMORROW NIGHT. Tomorrow evening will mark the opening of the 1939 season of the Masterton Orchestral Society, as well as the initial appearance as their conductor of Mr Charles W. Kerry, who has succeeded to the post hold so long and successfully by the late Mr James Candy. The occasion should be a notable one for many reasons, and no doubt the music-loving public of Masterton will do their part worthily by attending in large numbers to encourage the praiseworthy efforts of this enthusiastic band of musicians. Judging from the programme selected there is not. likely to be one dull moment from beginning to end, even the “classic” items having been chosen for their popular appeal. It must be a cold audience indeed which would not wax enthusiastic over the singing of the vocalist, Mr C. A. Clement, the possessor of a fine baritone voice. He moreover knows how to use it to the best advantage, and how to choose songs which not only give his talent full scope, but also make the strongest appeal to his audience. The orchestral fare to be provided includes the jolly “Military Symphony of Haydn, the lovely “Slumber Song” by Squire, two favourites usually associated with the pianoforte, this time to be heard in orchestral dress, Moszkowski’s “Serenata” and Paderewski’s celebrated “Minuet in G,” a dainty Parisian sketch, “Mademoiselle Chic,” by Percy Fletcher, Decker’s “Cinderella’s Bridal Procession,” and Mendelssohn’s rousing “Cornelius” march. Here is a veritable feast of good things.
