AMERICAN JOURNALISM

W. C. BRYANT'S ASSOCIATION. One of the most celebrated names in the early history of American journalism, is that William Cullen Bryant, for many years editor-in-chief of the “New York Evening Post.” By his ability, dignity and adherence to principles, he did much to raise the tone of journalism in the nineteenth century. His paper was democratic in politics, but when the slavery question became prominent, it was inclined to be antislavery, and in 1856, took the lead in the formation of the Republican Party. After unveiling a bust of Mazzini, in Central Park in New York. Bryant tripped over a doorstep while entering a house. The injuries he received resulted in his death a fortnight later. June 12. 1878.
