Yugoslavia and Rumania will pledge mutual assistance in the event of aggression. The significance of the move lies in Yugoslavia’s declared determination not to be drawn irrevocably into the axis. The Italian Minister called on M Gafencu and warned him against the adoption of a policy savouring of the democracies' encirclement move. M Gafencu replied very firmly that Rumania was at liberty to decide her own destiny.
