ROAD FATALITIES

CONDITION OF COUNTY ROAD. NO NEGLECT ON PART OF STAFF. (“Times-Age” Special.) Exception was taken to a portion of the “Times-Age” report of the recent tragic accident in which two young men were fatally injured when they crashed into a telephone pole in Belvedere Road, was taken by Councillor W. E. Reid at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council, held at Carterton. The statement in the report that Councillor Reid objected to was that “the cycle veered to the left-hand side of the road and got into the combings of the road, which had been left on the roadside by the county grader.” "This statement infers that there was neglect on the part of the county staff,” said Councillor Reid. “This is decidedly incorrect, and I do not wish the general public to gain the wrong impression which they certainly must do by reading that report.” Councillor Reid further stated that he had inspected the scene of the accident, and could not find any combings left by the grader that would cause an accident. The traffic inspector had expressed a similar opinion, he stated. “I only brought this matter up so that the public would be able to see that the county staff were not responsible, nor had they neglected their work in any way,” concluded Councillor Reid.
