ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

FIRST PERFORMANCE THIS SEASON. BRIGHT PROGRAMME ARRANGED. The music-loving public of Masterton will be interested to learn that the Masterton Orchestral Society, which suffered a severe loss by the death of its conductor, Mr James Candy, at the close of its last season, will present its next concert in the Opera House on Tuesday, June .27. Little has been heard of this musical organisation of late. Nevertheless it has for some months been hard at work preparing for its 1939 season, and it will be interesting to see how the players acquit themselves under thebaton of their new conductor, Mr Charles W. Kerry. Mr Kerry brings to his task an unbounded enthusiasm, a sincere love of his art, and a long experience. The players have backed him up nobly in his efforts, and it is to be hoped that a packed auditorium will greet the orchestra on its first appearance this year. The programme to be submitted is one of great interest and will undoubtedly appeal to all. There is a Symphony for the benefit of the more sophisticated, but as it is Haydns very jolly “Military” Symphony, there are no dull moments to be dreaded. Rossini’s stirring “William Tell” Overture, an assured favourite, is included; a lovely “Slumber Song” by Squire, some popular transcriptions, including Paderewski’s celebrated “Minuet,” and among other good things a couple of fine orchestral marches. The vocalist for the evening is Mr C. A. Clement, formerly of Adelaide, South Australia, who is a newcomer to Masterton, and who is certain to meet with an enthusiastic reception, not, only on account of the excellence of his singing, but also for his charming personality. Assuredly this is a concert not to be missed. The plan is now open at the Arts and Crafts, where seats may be booked free of charge. Patrons are advised to book early.
