TANNING INDUSTRY

MANUFACTURING IN CANADA. OTTAWA. The tanning industry in Canada dates back to 1165, when the early settlers established plants to preserve the h’des from their domestic cattle and from the wild animals. Today, tanning is one of the chief manufacturing industries in the Dominion, its annual output supplying a large proportion of the requirements of the leather-using industries of Canada, as well as providing for a substantial export trade. The value of the output of the tanneries has increased steadily during the past five years, and in 1937 reached a high total of 26,269,794 dollars. Imports of hides and skins that year were valued at 6,329,054 dollars, and of tanned leather 3,661,130 dollars, coming mainly from Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.
