GAMES IN WAIRARAPA. CARTERTON AND HASTWELLS DRAW. Conditions were ideal for the continuation of the Wairarapa Hockey Association's championship fixtures on Saturday afternoon. The main attraction in the senior competition was the Hastwells-Carterton match played at Hastwells. ’ A large crowd of spectators attended the match, and were treated to a fast and exciting game, as the result, a drawn game, would indicate. Several players in this game were treated for injuries, due mostly to the rough state of the ground. Wesley and Kiwi provided the senior match at Lansdowne, Kiwi gaining the honours by 3/1, after a very interesting game. Wesley are improving all the time and had Kiwi hard pressed, especially in the second spell, but could not just finish off their advantage, thus losing many good chances. Penalties were numerous in this match, and both these teams would be well advised to made a study of the rules. “Sticks” and obstructions were very bad.
The junior men’s sections produced some good hockey on Saturday, especially in the College Old Boys and Wesley A match. The pace was on all the way. and though they did most of the attacking, Old Boys went under by 2/1. There was no score in the first spell, but Wesley stole the match in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Old Boys were hard on attack, when the ball was sent up to Harrington, who caught the Old Boys backs out of position, and raced from half way to goal. Old Boys went very close to scoring soon after, but again their backs were too far up and Harrington repeated the dose to put Wesley 2 up. Wesley were forced to do some solid defensive work for the rest of the game, but they did it well, Old Boys breaking through the defence only once
College A maintained their unbeaten record by defeating Greytown B by 6/1, when they met at Greytown. Dalefield proved too good for Wesley B at Carterton while Carterton A easily accounted for College B. RESULTS. Senior Men: Kiwi beat Wesley 3/1. Carterton and Hastwell drew 2/2. Dalefield a bye.
