BASKETBALL
MATCHES IN WAIRARAPA INTERESTING CONTESTS. Some interesting contests were witnessed in the basketball competitions on Saturday. Results at a glance:— A Grade. lona 21, College A 11. Stars 31, College B 5. W.H.S. Old Girls 14, Collegians 7. B Grade. Stars B 13, College C 5. lona B 41, College D 3. Belvedere 11, Hospital 7. Carterton 17, College Colts 3. The match between College A and lona was a fast clean game although the first half was marred a little by the dropping of the ball among College forwards. The College tendency to receive the ball on the bounce instead of a clean direct pass, slowed up the game a little. The lona centres, P. Hanley, M. Eastwood, and M. V. Greenlees, showed excellent combination. B. Stitt played well for the lona forwards and R. Eastwood was prominent in the lona defence. The second half of the game was faster, the College proving a good match for their opponents. As the score would indicate, the Star-College B game was one-sided. The play of the Stars team as a whole outclassed that of the less experienced players. The Stars strength as usual, lay in their defence third, where R. Hawke played a greatly improved game with quicker passing, although the centre was not quite up to the usual standard. Joan Jackson also shows improvement in the forward third, shooting well. The College centres worked well, P. Cody giving a good performance. The tendency of the College forwards to pass too hard weakened this third.
The Collegians-W.H.S.O.G. match was a disappointing game. J. Hoare and M. Baskiville shot well for H.S.O.G. while W. Davie did good field work in this third. C. Butler played a good defence game for this team. J. Gemmel supported Collegians well in the forward third and their defence was much improved. In the Stars B-College C game the Stars team played quite a good game, especially in the centre third where J. Jones gave a good performance. The College team must learn to get away from the opponents, especially .in the goal third and thus eliminate scrambling. The College defence, J. Gemmell, played a very useful game. The match between College D and lona B was very one sided. The superior team-work of the lona girls proved too much for the College team. The Belvedere-Hospital match proved a very good one and was exceedingly close in the first half. Erratic passing by the Belvedere girls slowed up an otherwise good game. M. Hamilton and N. Meyton played a very effective game for Hospital. Against Carterton College played well but the Carterton team was too good. H. Douglas put in sound work in the College centre.
