VICIOUS VANDALISM
DESTRUCTION OF SCENIC BUSH.
A correspondent of the Forest and Bird Protection Society has reported a case of vicious vandalism. “I feel it my duty to report to you still another case of wanton destruction of our beautiful native bush,” the writer states. "Recently we witnessed the deliberate setting alight of this lovely Mangapohue Natural Bridge Reserve. What was a few minutes before, a glorious patch of bush and ferns, is now a mass of charred ruin. “This reserve is visited by hundreds of tourists through the year, but after the fire several parties were turned away as it was impossible to get through. “I might mention that we did' our best to stop this fire, but the party dropped their matches and with roars of laughter retired to a near-by hillside to watch the ‘fun’.” The executive of the society is making further inquiries about the outrage.
