FUN IN THE SNOW
TRAMPERS ON HOLDSWORTH. A VISITOR’S APPRECIATION. Making a start from Masterton well before daylight yesterday six members of the Wairarapa Tramping Club set out for Mount Holdsworth and the snow. Inside half an hour’s tramp from Bannister Hut the first patch of snow was encountered and from then on right to the Mountain House further drifts were passed. From the Mountain House to the new lan Powell Hut the snow lay very much thicker and in several places would be well over twelve inches in depth. An attempt was made to reach the summit of Mount Holdsworth, but .an exceedingly keen wind and thick mist made it out of the question. Snow sport was enjoyed around the Powell Hut area with fellow tampers and skiers, several of whom had been there since Friday night. Ski conditions were not of the best but some useful practice was put in. by those present. A visiting overseas skier who came, with others from Wellington for the weekend, was keenly enthusiastic about the new hut and the ski grounds at Holdsworth. Considering the lightness of the fall of snow it was surprising to find in places drifts of snow even up to three and four feet deep.
