The constructional methods being employed in the Rangitata diversion to supply water for irrigation to MidCanterbury were studied by a party of members of the West Melton Young Farmers’ Club. They saw modern machines at work on the Surrey Hills and near the headworks. The scheme and the engineering practice were explained to the youths by Mr Edgar Smith, the engineer at Klondyke, who was thanked by the party. The suggestion was made to the club by Mr Smith that it should arrange a visit to the Levels to study irrigation in actual operation. An increasing interest in irrigation by farmers, young and old, is being shown in Canterbury. although perhaps 20 years will pass before, some districts, considered suitable for irrigation, will obtain a supply of water.
