MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BUSINESS AT MASTERTON SITTING. MOTORING & OTHER CASES. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate's Court was held this morning before Mr H. I’. Lawry, S.M. On a charge of disobedience of a maintenance order in respect to his wife, with arrears at March 31. 1939. amounting to £lO 2s and in respect to his children, with arrears totalling £l2, Albert John Peard. who was arrested in Masterton recently, was remanded for fourteen days, on his own bond of £25 and a surety for a like amount. Inspector Milne, of the Transport Department, proceeded against Richaid Stanley Tyacke on a. charge of operating a motor vehicle at Opaki on May 20 with a load in ■ excess of that for which the vehicle was licensed. Defendant, for whom Mr T. Jordan, appeared, was fined £1 and costs. A similar charge was laid by Inspector Milne against Samuel Thomas Millar in respect to a motor vehicle at Mt. Bruce on May 18. Defendant was fined £1 and costs. The Borough Traffic Inspector, Mr J. McGregor, proceeded against Leo Stanley Royes on a charge of having driven, on Mav 20, a motor lorry in Queen Street, Masterton, at a speed exceeding thirty miles per hour. Inspector Milne estimated defendant’s speed at 40 miles per hour. The Magistrate adjourned the case until July 13 on condition that defendant did not drive a motor vehicle in that period. Roy Ralph, for not carrying a warrant of fitness for the car he was driving. was fined 10s and 10s costs. The information was laid by Mr McGregor. On a charge of failing to give way to traffic approaching on his right at the intersection of Church and Dixon streets on May 18. Rupert Maxwell Russell was fined £1 and costs 10s. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett said the charge arose out of a collision at the intersection mentioned. Although some damage was done to defendant’s car the other vehicle was not damaged, nor was anyone injured. Defendant s excuse was that the sun was shining in his eyes. Norman John Crewe was charged with failing to give way to traffic approaching on his right at the intersection of Pownall and Renall streets on May 13 last. Mr T. Jordan, who appeared for defendant, entered a plea of not guilty. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate imposed a fine of £1 and costs 13s.
