RUGBY FOOTBALL

EASY WIN FOR WELLINGTON. UNINSPIRING PLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Uninspiring Rugby was witnessed at Athletic Park yesterday when Wellington had its first home representative match of the season and defeated the touring Marlborough side by 33 points to 8. Conditions overhead were ideal, but the ground was slippery following heavy rain the previous day and slowed up the play. Fielding what was considered to be quite a strong team, Wellington was expected to win comfortably and did so, but in a far from convincing manner. The visitors were young and lacking in big match experience and took a long time to settle down. During that period Wellington went through the defence with ease and looked like securing a runaway win, but thereafter the play of the team was completely lacking in inspiration. The game afforded Wellington an excellent opportunity to turn on some attractive football, but this was not availed of largely because of Sargisson’s penchant for kicking and some surprisingly l poor handling. In the first minute of play Wright

scored. Taylor converted. Two more tries came in quick succession, Tindill and Wright scoring. Taylor converting the last try. Wellington added another nine points before the interval, Cooper scoring for Taylor to convert, and Sargisson potting a goal. Marlborough secured two well-deserved tries during the second spell, Orr profiting from mishandling by Burns, kicking over Taylor’s head and winning an exciting race for the ball. Jackson converted. The other try was obtained by Wilson. Wellington took a fresh lease of life in the concluding stages. Burns and Wales scoring. Taylor converted one try and kicked a penalty goal.
