HERD TESTING
(Continued from page 7.) SEASON’S (WEATHER. “A mild winter was experienced, spasmodic in July; but otherwise not exceptionally severe. On July 29 snow fell. August was a month in which there was a variation of wintry conditions, heavy rains and frosts, which retarded growth towards the end of the month. The testing season commenced on September 1, in wintry weather, a southerly, which has now been the case for the past three seasons. Rain fell for the greater part of the month, which, combined, with heavy winds was not conducive to good dairying. However, October 1 found us with beautiful sunny days with the cows yielding well and a wonderful growth of grass on stoney and light country. Strong winds and gales again developed which caused a serious set-back to pasture growth. These winds dried up the pasture and rain was welcomed at the beginning of | November and the first week in December. During December high winds prevailed, but frequent rains more than balanced this by allowing a continuous growth of pasture, although harvesting was seriously affected by the rains. January greeted us with winds which developed into gales and continued persistently and nullified the benefits to pastures. February was one of the driest months on record. Not only were pastures needing rain, but water for stock in many instances presented a problem. In April drought conditions continued until the end of the month when warm soaking rains fell. Several frosts were experienced in May, but, taken over all, it was a month of mild weather. Following are the details of herd averages and other particulars (J indicates Jersey, F Friesian, JF JerseyFriesian, JX Jersey Cross, A Ayrshire, S Shorthorn, PJ Pedigree Jersey):—
