BRILLIANT GATHERING
COLLEGE BALL LAST NIGHT SEVEN DEBUTANTES PRESENTED. AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. Artistically decorated in the College colours, with bamboo and pink toi-toi lining the walls and a beautiful stage setting of graceful palms against a dark blue background with silver stars and school crests, the huge lamp shades being also in the senool colours, the Wairarapa College Assembly Hall presented a brilliant scene last night for the Wairarapa College Parents’ Association’s second annual ball. The seven debutantes were presented to Mrs G. G. Hancox ' (wife of the Principal of Wairarapa College) and Mrs T. Jordan (Mayoress) by Mrs O. Jones (wife of the president of the Parents’ Association), being announced by Mr John Bird. The charming ceremony, arranged by Miss R. Edwards, created much enthusiasm. The debutantes were: Miss Sylvia Dunbar, who was attired in white satin covered with net, and pale pastel flowers with silver basket, and who was escorted by Mr Ashley Andrew; Miss Ruth Mackay, white stiffened lace over taffeta, escorted by Mr J. Mackay; Miss Dorothy Lyttle, nil green crinkle chiffon over satin, escorted by Mr Keith Minton; Miss Moira Whyborn, white net with valencian lace, escorted by Mr K. Jaine; Miss Esme Shoosmith, white net and pink flowers, escorted by Mr Rex Daniell; Miss Flora Thomson, blue embroidered organdie over white taffeta, escorted by Mr Jack Arcus; Miss Nancy Thomson, white organdie over pink taffeta, escorted by Mr Alex. Cruickshank.
The debutantes were each presented with a posy by Miss Peggy Wyeth, who was dressed in a pale blue satin suit, and who carried out her duties in a very capable manner. Miss Rona Edwards was gowned in red cyclamen and green accordian pleated georgette and was escorted by Mr John Macpherson. - Seated in the lounge were the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs T. Jordan, Mr and Mrs G. G. Hancox, Mr and Mrs J. Robertson, M.P., Mr and Mrs O. Jones, Mrs H. E. Pither (ball convenor), Mr and Mrs W. R. Nicol (chairman College Board of Governors), Mr A. J. Towns (secretary of Parents’ Association), Mr and Mrs A. Dixon (chief decorator). The capable and enthusiastic ladies’ committee, who worked with Mrs H. E. Pither, and were responsible for the excellent supper arrangements, were: Mesdames Prior, Parsons, Dickel, McKenzie, Jones, Judd, Masters, Shearer, Grantham, Towns, Mackay, Kerslake, Aikman, Howard, Tooby, Hancox, Daniell, Wilton. The men’s ball committee was: Messrs G. G. Hancox, L. A. Wilton, H. E. Pither, G. Dickel, A. J. Towns, A. Dixon, Parsons, G. Masters, A. W. McKenzie, M. G. McKay, F. C. Daniell, A. Drew, J. Hunter, assisted by Messrs J. Kerslake and Dr. N. H. Prior. The success of the gathering was in a very large measure due to the excellent efforts of the secretary, Mr A. J. Towns, and Mrs H. E. Pither (organiser), who had been engaged for some considerable time in making arrangements for a ball which was such an outstanding success. Those present spent a most enjoyable time to the music supplied by Pool s Dance Band.
