MINIATURE RIFLES WEEKLY COMPETITION. (“Times-Age" Special.) The weekly competition of the Carterton Miniature Rifles Club was held last evening. The weather conditions were against good shooting. Ladies’ aggregate and “Gladful” Cup: Miss Fisher 99, Miss Scott 99, Miss Hamer 96, Miss A. McPhee 95, Miss Lorenzen 91, Miss Freer 83. TABLE TENNIS HANDICAP TOURNAMENT. A table tennis invitation handicap tournament was held in the Carterton Methodist Hall last evening to help the funds of the Church Tennis Club. There proved to be only sufficient time for singles to be played, and it was agreed to continue the tournament in the combined doubles section next Saturday evening. The best singles players proved to be members of the same family—Rex and Noeline Andrews.’ , ' Mr Worsfold has generously donated some prizes for the tournament. Supper was provided by members of the club. Visitors were present from Greytown and Parkvale. Funeral of Mrs Armstrong. The funeral took place yesterday of the kite Mrs Clara Armstrong. Many mourners despite the weathir attended to pay their last respects to the deceased. At the church a service was conducted by the Rev W. F. Stent, Vicar of St Mark’s, who afterwards took the service at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded. The pallbearers were Messrs Thornton, A. E. Robinson, A. Hayden, W. C. Deller, A. Reid and J. Osborne (son-in-law). Heavy Hailstorm. A very heavy hailstorm was experienced in Carterton yesterday and for some time the hail was on the ground and was fairly thick in drifts against houses and fences. Personal Items. . , Mr and Mrs Treweek of Greymouth, are visiting Carterton and are staying with Mrs Treweek’s father, Mr Gordon Hughan, Pembroke Street. They will leave at the weekend for Auckland. Mr Treweek, who is supervisor at the Greymouth Post Office, is on his annual leave.
