AMERICAN GOLF TITLE

WIN FOR BYRON NELSON. C. WOOD DEFEATED IN FINAL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright PHILADELPHIA. June 13. Byron Nelson won the American open golf championship, defeating Craig Wood. Nelson took 70 for the round, and Wood 73. A cablegram from Philapephia dated June 11, stated that B. Nelson, D. Shute and C. Wood had tied for the American open title with aggregates of 284, and that they would play off for the championship over 18 holes on the Sunday. It would appear as if the trio must have played off on Sunday, when Nelson and Wood again tied, Shute being eliminated. This is the only explanation for Shute's name being omitted from the play-off. Byron Nelson is 27 years of age. In 1935 he won the New Jersey State open championship and was runnerup for the New Jersey P.G.A. tournament. In 1936 he annexed the Metropolitan open, was third in the Western open, Riverside open and Sacramento open, and second in the Vancouver open. In 1937 he came third in the North and South open, and was fifth in the British open. He was a member of the United States Ryder Cup team in 1937.
