CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL
MASTERTON COUNTY AGREES. PLANTING OF TREES ALONG APPROACHES. The planting of the principal approaches to Masterton with trees as a centennial memorial was approved at yesterday's meeting of the Masterton County Council. The chairman (Mr R. E. Gordon Lee), Councillor Colquhoun and the County Clerk reported on the result of the conference with representatives of the Masterton Borough Council. The cost will be shared 50-50.
Councillor G. Moore: “I don’t think that the ratepayers should be asked to pay this money.” The Clerk: '•Still it’s New Zealand’s centenary.” Councillor Colquhoun: “Personally I am not in favour of planting trees, but those planted will be about five inches through and six feet high.” Councillor H. H. Mawley: “I am quite in favour of the scheme and the cost is not so high.” He moved that the county agree to the scheme on the 50-50 basis. Councillor P. R. Welch: ‘‘l also am not keen on spending the ratepayers’ money on things like this, but the 5050 basis seems fair enough. The expense will of course have to be kept down as low as possible.” Councillor J. Donald seconded the motion, which was carried.
