The Governor-General, Lord Galway, will leave Auckland on Thursday and is expected to resume residence at Government House, Wellington, at the weekend.
The Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, returned to Wellington from the north today.
Sir Thomas Wilford has been an inmate of a private hospital in Wellington for the past two weeks. He is now reported to be seriously ill.
Mr and Mrs W. I. Armstrong are motoring to Auckland today in company with their son, Mr Rodney Armstrong, who is leaving foi’ England by the Rotorua tomorrow to join the Royal Air Force. Messrs J. Cherry, P. C. Venter (Wellington), W. A. Palmer and Mr and Mrs R. W. Brown (Inglewood), are visitors to Masterton and are among those staying at the Prince of Wales Hptel. Mr H. A. Findlay, of the Bank of Australasia, Upper Hutt, has received notice of his appointment to the management of the Te Aroha branch of the bank. He will be succeeded by Mr W. L. Barkman, of the Matamata branch. Sir Hubert and Lady Ostler arrived at Auckland from Wellington on Saturday. Sir Hubert will assume duties at the Supreme Court in place of Mr Justice Callan, who is taking up the work of the Arbitration Court in the South Island.
At an executive meeting of the Wairarapa Badminton Association last night, the president, Mr E. K. Eastwood, expressed pleasure at the inclusion of Mr and Mrs Hawksworth in the team to tour' Australia next month, and extended the congratulations of the association to the Wairarapa players. A notable gathering is expected at the Wellington Town Hall tonight ■when a public welcome will be extended to his Grace Archbishop O’Shea on his return from a world tour. The mayor, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, will preside. The speakers will be the mayor, the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, Bishop Brodie (Christchurch), Bishop Liston (Auckland), the Minister of Education, Mr Fraser, and Mr Perry, M.L.C.
Mr Marcus Marks, a representative of the Government on the Wellington Fire Board since its inception, has not been reappointed to that position this year. In his stead, Mr L. Glover, Wellington, has been appointed the Government representative. Mr Glover is the secretary of tthe Federated Fire Brigade Employees’ Union as well as the Wellington Fire Brigade Employees' Union. This is the first occasion in the history of the board that a union secretary has been appointed a member.
The appoitment of Mr George Galloway Chisholm as a stipendiary magistrate was announced yesterday by the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason. For several months last year Mr Chisholm held an appointment, as a temporary magistrate and exercised jurisdiction as a relieving magistrate in Auckland and Christchurch. Mr Chisholm, who is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, joined the Department of Justice in 1900 and has, for the past 17 years, held the position of registrar of the Supreme Court, clerk of the Magistrates’ Court and official assignee in Napier. Mr Chisholm will proceed to Auckland almost immediately to take up magisterial duty there during the absence on furlough of Mr Orr Walker. S.M. Two Commonwealth Fund Service Fellowships have been awarded this year to members of the New Zealand Public Service —one to Mr D. W. Woodward. M.Com., A.R.A.N.Z.. A.I.A.N.Z . of the Department of Industries and Commerce, and the other to Mr H. 1,. Hume, 8.E., B.Sc.. Assoc.M.lnst.C.E. Assoc.M.N.Z.I.E.. of the Public Works Department. This is a particularly high honour for the Dominion. for only five fellowships are awarded annually to members of the permanent cadres holding appointments overseas under the British Government, the Government of India, or the Government of a British Dominion, colony, protectorate or mandated territory. My Woodward is well known in Masterton where he lias assisted at British Music Society concerts.
