MASTERTON CELEBRATION

OBSERVANCE OF- CENTENNIAL. MARCH 14 PROPOSED. The selection of a suitable date on which to hold the Masterton centennial celebrations was a matter discussed by committees representing the Masterton Borough and Masterton County Councils at a meeting held yesterday afternoon. It was agreed to recommend to the respective bodies that the most suitable date (selected from a list submitted by the National Centennial Council) would be March 14. the date on which the settlement of Masterton was founded by the Small Farms Association, led by Mr Josepph Masters.

The hope was expressed that other district settlements in the Wairarapa would decide upon their respective dates so as to avoid any clashing with the Masterton celebrations, as if that were done it would enable residents in different parts of the district to attend other celebrations in the area. Mr T. Jordan (Mayor of Masterton) stated this morning that he would call a public meeting to set up a committee to make the necessary arrangements for the carrying out of the Masterton function. This meeting would be called before September, so that definite proposals could be available for submission to the National Council, which would meet that month to allocate subsidies, which were on a £1 for £3 basis.
