BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION’S COMPETITION RESULTS OF SATURDAY'S GAMES. COMMENT ON THE PLAY. The Wairarapa Basketball Association's matches were continued on Saturday last with the following results: A Grade. lona beat College B 31/10. Stars beat Collegians 26/1. College A Beat H.S.O.G. 16/12. B Grade. Greytown and College C drew 16 all. Greytown Hospital beat College Colts 14/7. Carterton beat Belvedere 18/10. Masterton Hospital beat College D. The High School Old Girls v College A was a very close contest, but the Old Girls missed J. Hoar who has shot most of their goals this seasop. Again L. Renner’s interceptions were excellent while J. Russell was the best of the Old Girls ’ centres. In this third, however, the Old Girls were out-played by the superior combination of College centres, and their speedy passes. M. Carroll and C. Shearer played excellently together. D. Heckler, a young 111 form player, was playing among the College forwards and thoroughly justified her promotion, shooting most of the goals. The Stars v Collegians match was marred at the beginning by an unfortunate accident, H. Howes having to retire with a badly sprained ankle. This made a very big difference to the Collegians’ team. The Stars team was on the whole not up to the usual standard. though A. Burgess and M. Gadsby played a very good defence game. 0.Lysaght’s shooting was off and most of the goals were scored by J. Jackson. The lona v College B match'saw the younger players put up an excellent fight and give the lona players a very good game. For lona B. Stitt still justified her inclusion among the forwards, but would score much more frequently if she took longer over her throw. R. Percy scored .'well and passed well, but did not move quickly enough. The centre passing between P. Hanley and M. Eastwood was excellent. For College P. Olivei- in the centre was outstanding, a strong and accurate thrower. S. Duley is a very promising forward and with bonstant practice will do very well indeed. In the B grade the best match was the College C v Greytown. The result of this match is very creditable to the College team who in the forward third particularly were up against bigger and. stronger girls; The College defence was the- weakest third; among the forwards Josie Gemmell was very good indeed, well supported by D. Ranston. In the College centre J. Moore played consistently well.. For Greytown L. Grey and' Mi Gates proved strong defenders, and I. Wilson and M. Connelly very good goal throwers. The Stars B and lona B match was one of the cleanest seen this season. The girls are to be congratulated on their good exhibition of the game without any personal contact. Ibna had the superior combination, especially from the centre to the goal, where C. Brady threw goals with great accuracy. Stars did not seem up to their usual form, but J. Stains threw some excellent goals. The Greytown Hospital v College Colts match was an interesting one. The Greytown players would do better if they moved, about more: They have not yet achieved sure combination. In the forward third: N. Banbury shot very well. For Colts L. Dickel and A. Stains played splendidly in the centre and H. Sutherland among the forwards. The passing of this team was good.
REPRESENTATIVE TEAM.
NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT.
At. the conclusion of the games an executive meeting was held, the president, Miss O. R. Sutherland, being in the chair. The selectors, Misses D. O’Donnell and O. R. Sutherland, presented a report to the meeting. A representative team has been selected but it was recommended by the selectors that if the team goes to the New Zealand tournament at Invercargill the Basketball Association should not be expected to raise the money necessary for fares and board.’ This will have to be paid by the players themselves, helped by any donations their various clubs are able to make to them. The association will be able to help the girls to the extent of the money raised each Saturday by. players’ donations. ■ The team is as follows: —
Defenders: A. Burgess (Stars), L. Renner (W.H.5.0.G.), M. Carroll (College), M. Gadsby (Stars). Centred: M. Eastwood (Iona), R. Edwards (College), M. McLaren (College), P. Hanley (Iona). Forwards: El Jones (Stars), P. Baskiville (College), J. Gemmell (Collegians). B. Stitt (Iona).
O. Lasaght (Stars) who has probably been the most consistent forward in the competition so far was unfortunately not available for selection. The selectors recommend that R. Edwards should captain the team, with L. Renner vice-captain.
This report from the selectors was adopted unanimously by the executive. R. Edwards, P. Kilmister, and A. Burgess were appointed B grade selectors. A B grade team is to be chosen as soon as possible and a match with the Hutt Valley will be played in July, the date to be arranged later. P. Kilmister was appointed supervisor for the referees’ examination, the date of which has been fixed for June 29. All girls wishing to enter for this examination should send entry and fee to R. Edwards at once.
