In the first game of the season, the local boys were defeated by 11 points to 7. Since then Carterton have improved considerably in their play and the game tomorrow should be a good one. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MONTHLY MEETING.
The monthly meeting of the Carterton’s Women's Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, yesterday afternoon, when Mrs H. Knutson presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of “The Ode to Friendship,” followed by the Aspiration and the prayer for peace. The treasurer’s report was read and adopted. Before commencing the business of the meeting the president asked the members to stand in silence as a token of sympathy with two valued members, Mrs S. C. Skelley and Mrs G. H. Deller.
It was decided to extend the competition for the rolled side of bacon (kindly donated by Mr and Mrs H. J. Brown) for one week, the closing date now being June 16. One new member was proposed. The president announced that it had been decided by the committee that in future only one entry by each member be allowed for the monthly competitions. A letter was read from Dominion headquarters asking for increased membership to “Home and Country.’ A number of members signified their willingness to become subscribers. The answers to the three questions in regard to immigration were asked for by the president, when it was signified that there was not much response regarding the placing of domestic workers in the district. Miss Verna Irwin played two pianoforte solos, which were warmly applauded, and she was presented with a dainty shoulder spray. The competitions were judged by Mrs R. Tankersley, who received a charming shoulder spr£y. The results are as follow: —Pikelets: Mrs H. Knutson, 1; Mrs A. Adams, 2; Mrs G. Stefi'ert, 3. Best article made from 1 yard of cotton material: Mrs E. T. Beaven, 1; Mrs G. Steffert, 2; Mrs W. S. Steven. 3.
Miss B. Millichamp sang two songs, which greatly pleased the members, and she was also the recipient of a shoulder spray. After a dainty afternoon tea, the year's programme was decided upon.
An amusing competition, guessing the owners of old shoes, was won by Mrs A. W. Beale. It was decided to recusitate the Singing Circle and Mrs V. L. Robinson was appointed convenor. The competitions for next month are:—Cocoanut ice, woollen cosy (knitted or crocheted), best gardening hint (to be written and handed in to be judged). The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Golf Club Teams. The following teams have been selected to play Grey town on Saturday the A team playing at Greytown and the B team at Carterton: — A team: H. J. Dudson, G. S. George, R. Fisher, J. Steel, C. K. Goodin, B. Whitburn, D. Smith, G. Brown. B team. —C. Clarke, G. Riggs, P. Shankland, H. Colson, B. Beaven, R. Harrington, L. H. Smart, J. Dwane. The remaining members of the club will play a medal round on the Taratahi links tomorrow, the draw being as follows: —No. 3 tec. —B. der and Aplin, Tankersley and E. T. Beaven, Harry a bye. Church Services. Church of England services will be held at Gladstone at 11a.m. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. on Sunday next. The Rev. W. F. Stent will conduct both services.
