JAPANESE OFFENSIVE
GREAT FORCES MASSED AGAINST ICHANG ANOTHER DRIVE AGAINST RED ROUTE. NATION-WIDE PURGE ORDERED BY CHIANG KAI-SHEK. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Dav. 1.20 a.m.) LONDON. June 8. The "Daily Telegraph’s” Hong Kong correspondent says the Japanese offensive against Ichang is gaining momentum and appears to be the focal point of the Chinese-Japanese conflict. The Japanese vanguard of five thousand has crossed the Han River and the main body of a vast army is assembling on the west bank. Simultaneously the Japanese are con - ducting an offensive in the Shansi and Shantung provinces, have surrounded the Chungchiao Mountain range, parallel with the Yellow River, and are swooping down on the southern foothills towards Sina, the key city on the ■‘Red route to Russia.” It is reported that General Chiang Kai-shek has ordered a nation-wide purge of the Army and civilians. It is reliably stated that five hundred persons have been arrested and scores executed for espionage. One war correspondent was executed and five have been arrested, including an American.
