MASSED CROWDS
AMERICANS SHOW EAGER ENTHUSIASM CROWDS AT EVERY STATION. ROUTE WELL GUARDED. NEW YORK, June 8. The Associated Press’s special correspondent states that but for an American locomotive drawing x the blue and silver train to Washington and troopers instead of Mounties standing in the corridors, it would be hard to realise that their Majesties have crossed the border. As in Canada. crowds are massed at every station and Americans have waited right into the small hours with all the enthusiasm of Britons for a glimpse of passing Royalty. A sweet revenge with the tram travelling through country which 160 years ago was the scene of the bitterest fighting between King George the Third’s redcoats and George Wash- * ington’s ragged continentals. It is anticipated that their Majesties will receive a tumultuous reception when they reach Washington at 11 p.m. A crowd in the vicinity of a million is forecasted. The United States feels keenly its responsibility for the safety of the Royal visitors, and 2600 troops surrounded the tiny station at Niagara, where the Secretary of State welcomed their Majesties. The entire route to Washington is closely guarded by tin-hatted troops with drawn bayonets. The train’s time schedule is kept secret and every crossing and bridge is closely guarded. Wherever the road ran parallel with the track a police car has kept pace with the train.
